I didn’t realize that our household was run by our miniature
Poodle, Dustee. I always knew she had certain quirks that we
handled but the more I read, the more I realized how much we
depend on her.
We adopted Dustee almost 2 years ago. Her prior owner was an
elderly woman who had passed away so we welcomed her into a
house with 2 other small dogs. Dustee fit right in and quickly
began to rule the roost. After a few months, we rescued 2
puppies and once again Dustee had to adjust.
Dustee “handles” us carefully but effectively. When it’s bedtime,
Dustee will stand on the floor in front of us and give us a cold
stern stare. She won’t move until we take all 5 dogs outside for
one last potty break and then head off to bed. Also, when Dustee
thinks it’s time for us to leave for work, she’ll start to bark and
won’t stop until all 5 dogs get treats.
We are ruled by ALL of our dogs but Dustee is the CEO. Our lives
revolve around her. She has epilepsy and needs medicine 3 times
a day. We often cannot stay away from the house for very long
so we can get home for her medicine. Both of us going out of
town? Ha! We went out of town for about a week this summer
(with Dustee) for the first time in 4 years!
Being a believer in Dogtology opened my eyes and helped me
realize that I actually do depend on my dogs just as much as they
depend on me. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Dustee and ALL our
dogs, and I wouldn’t have my life any other way.
Live. Bark. Believe.
